[무서운 이야기] 낯선 이웃

그날은 퇴근이 늦었다.

아파트 복도에는 아무도 없었고,

조용했다.

엘리베이터를 타고 올라와

현관문 앞에 서서

가방을 내려놓는데,

옆집 문이 살짝 열렸다.

 

That night,
I got off work late.

The apartment hallway was empty.

It was quiet.

I rode the elevator up
and stood in front of my door,
setting my bag down.

That’s when
the door to the apartment next to mine
opened slightly.

 

 

나는 놀라서

그 문을 힐끗 바라봤다.

그 순간,

문틈 사이로

낯선 남자가 고개를 내밀며 웃고 있었다.

그는 처음 보는 얼굴이었다.

 

Startled,
I glanced at that door.

In that moment,
a stranger—a man I’d never seen before—
peeked his head out and smiled.

 

나는 작은 목소리로

“안녕하세요.” 라고 인사했다.

그 남자는 웃으며

나를 바라보다가

낮게 말했다.

 

I’d never seen him in the building.

I gave a small, polite nod.
“Hello,” I said.

The man just smiled at me.
And then,
in a low voice,
he said:

 

 

“혼자 사시죠?”

“Do you live alone?”

 

 

그 한마디에

내 몸이 식은땀으로 젖었다.

나는

가방을 움켜쥐고

급히 문을 열어

안으로 들어갔다.

 

A chill ran down my spine.
Cold sweat broke out all over me.

I grabbed my bag,
fumbled with my keys,
and hurried inside.

 

문을 닫으려는 순간,

문틈 사이로

그 남자의 손이

스윽 하고 안쪽으로 들어왔다.

 

Just as I was closing the door,
his hand
slid through the gap—
slowly,
creeping inside.

 

 

나는

비명을 지를 뻔하며

문을 힘껏 밀어

손을 밀어냈다.

 

I nearly screamed.

I shoved the door hard—
pushing his hand out.

His hand disappeared,
and I locked the chain.

 

손이 빠져나갔고

나는 체인을 걸었다.

문에 등을 기댄 채

숨을 고르는데,

문 너머로

그 남자의 낮은 웃음소리가 들렸다.

 

Leaning against the door,
I tried to catch my breath.

From the other side of the door,
I heard his low, soft laughter.

“내일 또 인사하러 올게요.”

“I’ll come say hello again tomorrow.”

 

 

 

그날 이후,

현관문 앞에 서면

언제나

그 손이 들어올 것 같은

기분이 들었다.

 

Since that night,
every time I stand at my door,
I can’t help but feel
like that hand
might slip through the gap again.
